STOP! Media release – Tuesday 4 November – 6.30pm

STOP welcomes Goodman’s firm stance on the S106 conditions for the former Andover Airfield site and supports their decision to terminate their contract with Tesco on the grounds that the superstore company would not accept these essential conditions.

Rhonda Smith, Chair of the STOP Alliance comments: “Councillors and all attendees heard clearly at the Planning Meeting on 1st September that without the rigorous controls outlined in the S106 agreement a Megashed on the Airfield site would NOT have the support of TVBC’s Planning Department.

“STOP’s opposition to Goodman’s planning application development has never been against Tesco themselves, but to the siting of an 850,000 sq ft MEGAshed on the Airfield site, close to an already overloaded A303.

STOP! and its huge supporter base across north-west Hampshire and beyond are against a MEGAshed on the Andover Airfield, no matter who the tenant. A MEGAshed on that site is over-sized and out of place and will create noise, light and air pollution across the whole of Andover as well as putting all local and visiting drivers at risk due to the massive increase in HGV traffic.

“STOP! remains focused on 1st December Planning Control meeting as we understand that Goodman intend to continue with their application, albeit without a tenant and that TVBC has re-confirmed the date. We will therefore continue our work to brief Councillors and to reaffirm the sound planning grounds on which this application was rejected on 1st September at NAPC.  STOP! will also be pointing out to all Councillors, Hants County Council, Highways Agency and other statutory consultees that much of the traffic data that has been submitted and scrutinised as part of this application came from Tesco, and that the HGV traffic modelling may need to be reassessed.

We have further concerns regarding Goodman itself. With their on-going financial problems, can they be viewed as a reliable partner for this development? Is it their intention to get permission and then sell the site on? These are questions that TVBC and Councillors and others need to ask.

“STOP!’s position remains the same. We are opposed to a MEGAshed – anybody’s MEGAshed – on the Airfield. Andover needs and deserves the mixed Business Park promised in the Andover Vision and the local plan. TVBC Councillors on the Planning Control Committee must endorse the NAPC decision to reject this application.

We look forward to the TVBC Councillors rejecting this application once again, or to Goodman withdrawing this application.
