Campaign bulletin June 2008
Do not
believe everything you read in the newspapers!
In
particular, do not believe everything you read in the
Andover Advertiser which last week published several
articles about Goodman's proposed development at Andover
Airfield which, of course, will be dominated by Tesco's
MEGAshed.
Based on
answers supplied by Goodman, Tesco & TVBC from questions
posed by the newspaper, it was reported last week that
it was ‘all systems go’ regarding Highways and that
minimum salary packages of £24k will be provided.
Over the
coming weeks we shall be sending you information that:
¨
Challenges the claim that the highways
authorities have now given approval for the development.
¨
Reveals the facts about Tesco pay levels
in existing distribution centre's and their past record
at delivering the number of jobs Tesco claim will be
created.
¨
Addresses the issue of increased
night-time noise for the hundreds of residents that live
within earshot of the A303 - an issue brushed aside by
Goodman.
Goodman say
that they expect the application to be considered by
TVBC next month and construction to begin in August -
which would give Andover residents an early taste of
what 2,000 HGV movements a day feels and sounds like as
this is also the traffic level forecast for the
construction phase. However the best information that
we have is that the Northern Area Planning Committee is
unlikely to consider the application before the second
half of August – and more likely now to be September.
As we have
said before, this will be a long campaign. Please keep
up your support and consider what our activity has
already helped achieve:
ü
Delay
of the MEGAshed planning decision for a 18 months
ü
Better landscaping and design (although it can never
hide the MEGAshed)
ü
A
partial ban on virtually all HGV movements along local
roads
ü
A
potential cap on the hourly number of HGVs leaving the
site
ü
A
potential ban on Megashed car traffic through the
villages south-west of Andover
ü
Better noise protection for residents living near the
distribution centre.
With a little more pushing we can get what we really
want to achieve - a business park, not a lorry park!
